Improving access to inclusive quality education and retention of girls in secondary school in climate vulnerable areas

The Issue

Coastal areas in Bangladesh are prone to climate disasters, leading to widespread poverty, high rates of child marriage, trafficking and gender-based violence.

Farida’s approach

Farida has been working to advocate for people with disabilities for over two decades and is an active member of the National Steering Committee of the National Foundation for Development of Disabled Persons. She is eager to bring education of girls with disabilities to the forefront of national and international discourse.

Since its establishment in 1996, Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association has been working to promote equity for people with disabilities and implementing initiatives to empower their livelihoods across 38 districts in Bangladesh. They are currently focusing their efforts in disaster prone and climate vulnerable areas, implementing projects on inclusive education with disaster risk reduction, digital education for students during climate crisis and improvement of sexual and reproductive health and safeguarding practices to increase enrollment and retention of girls and people with disabilities.

Through their Malala Fund grant, the Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association will improve access to inclusive quality education and retention of girls in secondary schools in Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira District in Khulna Division.
